the first floors in ocean city. talking about the response, we expect to get an update from ocean city officials about 10:00 this morning on the condition and the efforts underway. already this morning we have seen ocean city police and members of the national guard driving along the boardwalk to check out the conditions and to make sure nobody is out here this morning. that is the big concern, for safety and for flooding out here. talking about that in general, we have mandatory evacuations for areas south of this point where we are. 8:00 last night is when there were told to leave by. if you of not been able to leave by now, you have to stay in place. they've closed the bridge from 50 to be able to get in and out. if you are still here, you'll have to stay through the duration of the storm. there were voluntary evacuations for low-lying areas along the delmarva peninsula for people concerned about flooding. we have seen areas boarded up for a precaution for what will come our way. the big concern is we are already starting to see what we're seeing during the height of irene. and we a

, and washington, d.c. flood waters along the new york city coastline made it difficult for first responders to reach a massive six-alarm fire which began overnight in queens. in new york alone, nearly 2 million people are without power. con edison intentionally, actually, had to cut power to tens of thousands of folks in order to try to protect equipment from rising water. then there was an explosion at a substation in manhattan, that caused -- that was caused by flooding, flying debris knocked out power to another 250,000 people. also last night, a backup power system failed at nyu medical center and that forced the evacuation of all 215 patients to nearby hospitals. that's everything we think we know right now. now, coastal flooding, destructive winds, heavy rain actually will continue as sandy heads inland. let's get the very latest on the storm's path. we go to the man, to the iron man for us lately, nbc news meteorologist bill karins. where does sandy stand now? what's going to be affected? and where is it heading? >> sandy is going to be more than anything else a nuisance today. peopl
